Lairds Lodge Hotel South Africa

Lairds Lodge
The Lairds Lodge mansion, beautifully constructed in Cape Dutch style, is located on 24 hectares of land between Knyzna and Plettenberg Bay and provides an excellent starting point for discovering the Garden Route with its national parks, magnificent beaches and pretty little towns.

The lateral gables are decorated with small amphoras, the ornamental gable overlooking the garden is decorated with a lion’s head and a festoon.
The country estate, designed in the shape of an enclosed courtyard, opens onto the garden via a covered terrace running over the whole width and providing a wonderfully breezy extension to the living areas.

A path trimmed with white blooms leads into the garden and to the estate’s ponds, meadows and woodland. Towering agapanthus blooms frame the buildings and accentuate the spacious lawns.

The large premises invite you to go on relaxing walks, where there’s always something new to discover. Guided walking-tours into the surrounding area with interesting explanations about the flora and fauna are offered. On no account should you fail to plan a trip to the coast in September or October, because that’s when the whales arrive.
The austere architecture of the grounds is very beautifully complemented by the lush blooms of the shrubs and the large selection of very different plants.

No Cape Dutch garden is complete without roses. The entrance trellis would be a worthy setting for a wedding, its entwined red roses welcoming guests with their marvellous scent.

Indispensable for a perfectly relaxing stay: the large pool with luxury sunloungers, so typical of South African comfort, and the large, shady umbrellas. Refreshments and snacks are also served at the pool on request.

Lairds Lodge has positively beautiful and stylish decor. The tall, bright rooms are lovingly decorated right down to the very last detail. Natural materials, rare woods and beautiful fabrics create a pleasant and cosy atmosphere.

The dining room is not only a feast for the eye: along with luxurious breakfasts, the finest dinner menus are also served here, fresh delicacies from the land and sea, among them, of course, the region’s oysters and also the legendary crayfish.
With its many different cultural influences, South African cuisine has surprising things to offer. Tender pieces of crayfish are quite often served with a mild Cape Malaya curry, and Snoek, an especially tasty Atlantic predatory fish, enriched with a honey-sweet muscatel grape jam, perfectly complementing the slightly salty flesh of this fish, which is similar to a pike.

Lairds Lodge has very comfortably fitted rooms, all of them allowing direct access to the garden and with a private terrace. The colours, fabrics and decorations are all very beautifully coordinated. Coloured engravings and drawings of “wild” animals provide for a real African feeling.

Above: Protea cynaroides, the very beautiful and long-lasting type of the famous Cape protea, is exported to Europe for expensive flower arrangements. Here, of course, they are simply gathered from the garden.

Typical of South African comfort are the excellent beds with an amazing number of pillows and the finest bed-linen
